Space Watch: Roger Hanson Examining the asteroid peril

The Earth’s vulnerability to being hit by large asteroids and meteors was dramatically demonstrated on February 15, 2013.

On that day a 20 metre diameter meteor weighing 13,000 tonnes and travelling at 70,000km/h, slammed into the Earth’s atmosphere about 30km above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk.

Luckily the approach angle was shallow so the bulk of the collision energy was absorbed by the atmosphere. ∞∞∞∞∞ www.stuff.co.nz ∞∞∞∞∞
