Pastors News: Protestant pastor feels ‘connected’ to Pope Francis

Gary Smith remembers watching a live feed from the Vatican in March 2013, when Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was selected to lead the Roman Catholic Church. It was the same day that Smith began his path toward ordination in the United Church of Christ.

“Pope Francis came out and said: ‘will you pray for me?’ And I feel like I’ve always been very connected to Francis as a result.”

A “cradle” Catholic, Smith played “priest” as a young boy, using grape juice and potato chips for communion while preaching to the stuffed animals in his room. He explored the priesthood from high school into his early 30s. ∞∞∞∞∞ MORE »»»»
